Members of planning and zoning boards, Conservation Advisory Councils, and other municipal committees or staff are invited to participate in an entry-level training using online map tools and a free version of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software for local planning purposes. Participants will receive and practice using a free data package compiled for Columbia County. The package contains data commonly used to analyze the potential impacts of development projects, conduct SEQRA reviews, undertake comprehensive planning, and identify conservation priorities. It also includes tax parcels, soils, wetlands, floodplains, topography, and other data related to natural resources.
Participants must bring a laptop computer. The data package uses ESRI ArcReader Software. To check that you will be able to run the software, use this online utility. Information about system requirements will be sent to registrants. NOTE: The data package is not available for Apple computers.
Self-certification training credits will be offered to members of planning boards for 3.0 hours of training. By attending, participants commit to (1) using these skills on behalf of their community and (2) sharing their new skills with fellow board and committee members.
The training is sponsored by the Columbia Land Conservancy, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and the NYSDEC Hudson River Estuary Program.
