Part 2: February 18, Greenport Public Conservation Area
Conrad and Claudia Vispo of the Farmscape Ecology Program lead a two part series exploring nature in our local surroundings. The workshops will focus on learning about and identifying the most common woody plants species of Columbia County in winter.
The world may be only partially green (those hardy evergreens!) during the depths of winter, but one need not suffer from botanical frustration – there is still a lot of plant exploration that can be done. This two-part workshop is intended to help you get to know some of our woody plants in their winter condition and also to familiarize you with certain leftovers of herbaceous summer greenery.
The first get together will combine out-of-doors and in-doors periods. Our focus will be on introducing you to the evidence: the buds, branches, form, dried leaves, and bark that you can use to begin narrowing down your identification guesses. We’ll define some of the terms commonly used to describe different visible plant traits. We’ll see some outside examples and also inspect samples in the ‘comfort’ of our informal lab. The second session will be entirely in the field and will take us to a somewhat different forest where we are likely to meet up with a few new botanical characters.
The sessions are free but there is a limit of 15 participants and registration is required. A list of suggested materials (such as field guides, magnifying glasses) will be sent to each registrant.
