Stockport Middle Ground Flats Paddle

Weather permitting, we’ll head north on the Hudson River and will paddle around Stockport Middle Ground Flats. This will be a moderate paddle, and prior paddling experience is required. Natural History Outing

Join ecologists Conrad and Claudia Vispo from the Hawthorne Valley Farmscape Ecology Program for an informal “Participatory Natural History Outing.” This is an impromptu joint exploration of the plants and animals found in the meadows and forests of this public conservation area. The meadows will be in full bloom with fall-flowering wildflowers – an opportunity to brush up on your asters and goldenrods…

Explore the World of Mushrooms

What is a mushroom? Come and explore the world of these interesting organisms: their role in the soil, their role in nutrient recycling, and their relationship with plants. Our guide will be Taro Ietaka, Director of Conservation at the Rye Nature Center and also the President of the Connecticut-Westchester Mycological Association (COMA).
This will be a family friendly walk. If you bring children, however, please discuss with them the importance of not handling mushrooms unless a professional mycologist has first established that it is safe to do so. We will all be relying on the expertise of our guide, Taro Ietaka.

Woodlands, Wetlands, and Water: What Local Decision-makers Need to Know

Lets Learn about Bats and Build a Bathouse

In the spirit of Halloween, we invited wildlife biologist Casey Tompkins to help us explore the life of bats – their amazing adaptations and great benefit to our ecosystems; the threats they face; and how we can encourage them around our home.
Casey Tompkins will first introduce us to the life of bats at the Schor pavilion, then he will lead us on a walk in the woods to discuss the natural habitat of bats. Finally, we will all walk over to CLC’s barn to build bat boxes that participants get to take home to provide a safe haven for bats in their own garden.
We ask for a $5 fee to cover bathouse construction costs. Please, register for this event so we know how many participants to expect.

Effective Farmland Lease Drafting and Dispute Resolution

The Wonders of Raptor Migration

Why do raptors migrate and how do they know the way? How did these amazing birds of prey adapt to such a long journey? Come and find out for yourself.
Wildlife rehabilitator and educator Trish Marki of Silent Wings will tell us about the Fall migration patterns of our native raptors. She will have live birds with her to show us up close and personal the amazing adaptations of these magnificent hunters. This will be a family friendly, interactive educational program. The event will be outdoors, so please dress for the weather.
