Edible Plants

Edible Wild Plant Walk

Russ Cohen, professional environmentalist and wild foods enthusiast, leads an outdoor walk and introduces 25 – 45 different species of edible wild plants, some in collectible quantity and condition. Keys to the identification of each species will be provided, as well as information about its edible portion(s), season(s) of availability, flavor and nutritive value, and tips on preparation. Cohen will also discuss guidelines for safe and environmentally responsible foraging. Participants may find it useful to bring a jackknife, several bags for collecting samples, notebook, and pen.

In honor of CLC’s 25th Anniversary, Hawthorne Valley is hosting renowned author, educator, and environmentalist Bill McKibben for an afternoon engagement.  Don’t miss this opportunity to hear McKibben’s take on our changing planet and how you can make a difference while enjoying local produced refreshments on one of CLC’s earliest conservation easements.

At 4:30 pm there will be a pre-event reception with drinks and light fare. Charge for the pre-event reception is $40.

Amble along trails and look for spring flowers on Phudd Hill and in the Floodplain Forest of Hawthorne Valley Farm. Walk led by ecologists Conrad and Claudia Vispo. Stay for a while after the walk for the opening of the May Day celebration at Hawthorne Valley School, watch the dance of the children around the May Pole, and have a picnic lunch.
